A secret Cornish recipe for Saffron Cake dating back over 100 years has taken Gold at this year’s national Great Taste Awards.

The Simply Cornish Saffron Cake was up against over 7,000 food and drink products from across the UK and was named as a coveted 3 star Gold Award winner – achieved by fewer than 2% of entrants – which according to the Awards classes it as a “Wow – you must taste this” product.

The West Cornwall company’s Strawberry and Clotted Cream Shortbread was also named at 2 Gold Star winner at the awards, organised by the Guild of Fine Food, the UK trade association for speciality food and drink producers in the UK.

Judges said the Simply Cornish Saffron Cake was traditionally correct, flavoursome and well distributed with fruit and peel.

“We are absolutely delighted that the judges – made up of some of the UK’s most influential food people including key buyers, retailers, chefs and food writers – felt our Saffron Cake was worthy of the top award of 3 Gold Stars."

“It is an extremely rigorous judging process so to have this national food accolade will undoubtedly give our Saffron Cake additional kudos in the food and drink market and we are thrilled that such a long standing secret Cornish recipe really has stood the test of time and is still delighting with its tastes and flavours today,” said Jason Jobling of Simply Cornish."

Made with real saffron to a secret 100-year old recipe, using only the best La Mancha Saffron from Spain – the world’s most expensive spice - the Saffron Cake is said to date back to the days when Phoenician traders exchanged spices and other goods for tin from the Cornish Mines.

Simply Cornish donates £500 to the Chough Club

Following a successful year of sales for the tasty limited edition ‘oats, cherries & chocolate chips’ biscuit we are delighted to have raised a total of £500 for the Chough Club RSPB. Martin Sanders from Simply Cornish was thrilled to present Cat Lee Marr from the Chough Club with a cheque of £500 at St Just's Primary School.

Our special celebratory biscuit was created following the Cough Club completion in 2009 where Finn Stantan-Nadin of Sennen County Primary School chose cherries (beak and legs), oats (granite rocks), chocolate chips (eyes) and syrup to create a truly yummy biscuit.
